This book examines the careers of both Elvis and the Beatles chronologically, highlighting the many areas of similarities between them, as well as some striking differences. (I should note that I have worked with the author over the years on Beatles events and history, and I am quoted in a couple of places in this book.)Ms. Young has researched and included many fascinating stories and events in this book. Everyone knows about the infamous meeting in 1965 when the Beatles finally met Elvis at his home in Bel-Air. Many have reported on it, trying to piece together what really happened, because no photographs were allowed at the meeting. As a result, many have not gotten the story straight. Even The Beatles humorously remembered the events of the day differently during The Anthology project. One of the arguments is whether there was a jam session or not with Elvis that day. Ms. Young does an excellent job tracking down the facts to set the story straight.As her book carefully chronicles, it might surprise fans of both that the Beatles individually kept in contact with Elvis over the years, as did manager Brian Epstein with Col. Parker, etc. There was much more going on behind the scenes than anyone knew. One of the Beatles even wanted to produce Elvis at one point, and of course both did covers of each other’s songs as most recall.Most fans assume that George Harrison’s and The Beatles’ interest in eastern philosophy and religion was way beyond what the gospel-singing, religious Elvis would have approved of. Yet we discover in Ms. Young’s book that there is a lot more to learn about Elvis’s interest in spirituality, and that his interests were quite “new age” and preceded the Beatles.The final chapters do an excellent job outlining the aftermath of their fame, including the deaths of Elvis, John Lennon and George Harrison, the many awards, tributes and memorials to them, and how the question “Who was bigger?” has been addressed. It might surprise you what gauges are used to calculate that answer.I strongly recommend this book to fans of Elvis and/or the Beatles. The book gives strong insight and a behind-the-scenes view of both, and how they felt about each other. Both acts revolutionized popular music, and The Beatles always said if it wasn’t for Elvis, they wouldn’t have come into being. This book is a great tribute to both. I found a lot of information about both Elvis and the Beatles that was informative and very interesting. So far I have been really happy with all the bits that show personality traits that I found to be new to me.
