I grew up watching Brian Linehan on TV and reading George Anthony in the newspaper. He's a lightweight writer and Linehan is a lightweight subject for a biography - I mean it's not like Steinbeck writing about Hitler - which would probably rate 5 stars.The book is an easy read. The part written about the years Linehan was starring on his own show CITY LIGHTS was pretty entertaining. A lot of the rest of the book is mostly the airing of dirty linen - people squabbling over petty things - dentists talking about the sex life of their famous patient - Linehan's boyfriend yelling at Shirley MacLaine to get her foot off his kitchen food prep island.The last part of the book became so depressing (suicides, some illness Linehan died of - probably cancer, losing control of his bowls in public) that I didn't read it to the end.All the time I was reading this book I had the sickening feeling that Linehan was being betrayed by Anthony. I don't really understand how Anthony could have been such close friends with Linehan for all those years and then turn around and betray the most personal of confidences, painting Linehan as this ultimately pathetic MONSTER. The book certainly isn't a tribute to a friend. I guess I also didn't finish it to the end because I was just so embarrassed for Brian. I guess someone can stab you in the back, even after you're dead. If Linehan knew, he wouldn't just turn over in his grave, he'd be having convulsions. To say that "Starring Brian Linehan" is simply a biography is to diminish the scope and scale of this incredibly gripping read. Anthony's writing is absolutely riddled with graceful and astounding insights into one of Canada's biggest personalities and the many worlds he navigated. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to go on a movie junket; if you've ever tried to keep a crucial part of your life hidden from those closest to you; if you've ever wished you could somehow reinvent yourself, you MUST read this book.
